Logging Into Visidaq
6400B Remotely
From a UNIX Workstation with
X-Windows

You can operate the Visidaq 6400B Enterprise Class
Data Acquisition System remotely from any UNIX Workstation
which supports X-Windows and is connected to the Visidaq 6400B system
via a Local Area Network connection. This feature provides a valuable
timesaving capability for customers who need to locate the data
acquisition system in distant test cells and have the ability to
collect, review, analyze and print sensor data from their desktops.
Network printing sends reports to a local printer.
Additionally, this feature provides the ability for
multiple operators to be logged onto one data acquisition system
simultaneously. It is possible for one operator to be using the system
from its local display monitor while other operators are using it
remotely. It is also possible for multiple operators to be logged in
remotely with no local operator present. This feature provides a clear
advantage over standalone systems by eliminating time consuming travel
between buildings and test sites when the need for data collection and
access is urgent.
PREREQUISITES
Password Setup
A password must be setup on the Visidaq 6400B system for the Visidaq
user account before this feature will work. Use SAM to set up the
password. Open the System_Admin application group in the Application
Manager and double click SAM. In the SAM main window double click
Users and Groups. Double click Users. Select the Visidaq
Login Name and click on Actions. In Actions click on Modify
then on Modify Password. Choose a password and record it in a
secure place. Enter your new password and follow the prompts to
click on OK's and File Exit's back out of SAM. Additional
information on password setup can be found in the HP CDE Getting Started
Guide.
Verify Hostname Setup
Each Visidaq Model 6400B and Workstation to be used for remote log on
must contain each other's hostnames and IP addresses in their respective
Host files.
Verify Communications Path
Use the ping command followed by the hostname of the other system to
verify that a network connection is established between systems. Test
this connection in each direction to make sure the connections work
first.
PROCEDURE
You will need to know the hostname for the machine from
which you are logging in and the hostname of the Visidaq 6400B system.
The "hostname" command given at the shell prompt will yield this
information for the machine from which it is performed. In the following
examples,
"remhost" is the hostname of the remote workstation;
"visihost" is the hostname of the Visidaq 6400B system;
"pswd" is the Visidaq account password on the Visidaq 6400B system.
Commands you enter are enclosed in quotes (don't type the quotes).
Before logging on, you must be sure that the remote host will accept
requests from the Visidaq client. To ensure this, enter the following at
the shell prompt: (this needs to be done only once after each boot-up at
each remote workstation)
$"xhost +"
To log onto the Visidaq 6400B system type the following commands:
$"rlogin visihost -| visidaq"
Password:"pswd"
$"export DISPLAY=remhost:0.0"
$"visidaq"
A Visidaq window should start up at the remote machine. Note that if
only one software license has been purchased, you can only run Visidaq
from one location at a time; be that either a remote workstation or the
Visidaq 6400B itself. The purchase of additional Visidaq Pro X/ime
software licenses will permit simultaneous operation.
